Following ESPN’s projected records for the 2017/2018 NBA campaign, the Los Angeles Lakers were listed 13th amongst the Western Conference, predicted to win only 33 games this upcoming season.

Though, ESPN’s projected 33 wins is actually a minor improvement for the Los Angeles Lakers in comparison to last season’s horrid 26-56 record. I did find the prediction to be quite underwhelming.

Is it wrong to believe the Lakers might have a sliver hope at obtaining the 8th seed?

Absolutely not.

We could dabble in advanced analytics all day, only to come up with nothing more but a prediction.

Whether it’s a bold statement or not, the Lakers do in fact have a shot at a playoff birth. To completely trash the scenario in it’s entirety before this roster even steps foot on the floor is simply unjust.

Below I’ve listed 3 keys to a potential playoff rebirth in which will further legitimize the thought of the Lakers being back in the postseason.

Key #1: Defense, defense, defense!

Following the end of last season, the Lakers ranked 28th amongst the league in defensive efficiency. Though the additions of Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Brook Lopez and improvement from Julius Randle and Brandon Ingram may differ the conversation. If the Lakers were to improve their defensive efficiency to rank top 15 amongst the league, that in itself can result in more wins on the year.

Key #2: Lonzo Ball and Brook Lopez must become a 1-2 punch

With incredible court vision and IQ from the likes of the 2017 NBA Summer League MVP, Lonzo Ball. Brook Lopez should effortlessly thrive throughout next season while on the court with Lonzo, displaying an array versatility. And once Ball finds him, his only job is to put it in the basket.

If all comes to fruition, Ball and Lopez could very well become a deadly combination for defenses across the league, translating to better offensive efficiency throughout the season.

Key #3: Brandon Ingram taking charge

Our final key is likely to be the most important of them all. Brandon Ingram must become a vocal leader, taking charge on and off the court.

Ingram is poised to have a breakout season, he has all the tools to become a legitimate threat and if the chips fall where they may, there is no telling where the Lakers finish.
