5) Will Any Lakers Rookie Other Than Ball Contribute?

As Lakers fans well know, forward Kyle Kuzma surprised nearly everyone with his outstanding Summer League play, during which he was named the Finals MVP. He displayed terrific 3-point shooting accuracy, an ability to drive to the hoop, and excellent defense.

However, he needs to show how effective he will be in the regular season against true NBA players. At the very least, if he can continue to shoot well from the 3-point line and contribute on the defensive end, he will earn playing time at one of the forward positions.

Meanwhile, guard Josh Hart played little this summer due to injury, so any evaluation must be based solely on his four-year college career. He started the last two seasons, starring for a Villanova team that won the 2016 title, and was a 2017 finalist, like Ball, for NCAA player-of-the-year honors. So, at least theoretically, he should be more NBA-ready than most other rookies. It remains to be seen, of course, how successful he will be as a pro.

Center Thomas Bryant demonstrated excellent potential in limited action. Despite his size, he showed that he’s capable of running up and down the court (certainly an advantage when teamed with Ball) and an ability to make a 3-point shot. His emotional nature should also endear him to teammates and fans.

Each of these rookies has the benefit of being drafted by the current front office, which will naturally feel a sense of ownership toward them. However, which, if any, of the trio, will ultimately prove to be a longer-term asset?
