Most Lakers rumors have been that Julius Randle will likely be traded. However, Randle might not have as much value as once thought.
As we approach the trade deadline, there has been plenty of Lakers rumors about who will be traded. So far, the most likely candidates to be traded on the Lakers is Julius Randle, Larry Nance Jr, and Jordan Clarkson.
With all three players being young and affordable right now, the Lakers appeared to have some valuable trade assets. However, recent reports are that teams aren’t quite as high on Julius Randle as once thought.
Due to Randle being a restricted free agent at the end of the season, teams appear to be willing to wait to see if he hits free agency rather than give up some valuable for him like a draft pick this season.
Recently, Bobby Marks of ESPN.com talked about the feeling around the league surrounding Randle. Here’s what he had to say.
"“The biggest obstacle is that he’ll be a restricted free agent in the offseason. In talking to teams, they feel that instead of giving up an asset or first-round pick for Randle, they can just go out and sign him. Give him an offer sheet in the summer and not give up an asset. … If [Lakers] keep him, that’s an indication that they’re going to retain him when we get into the summer.”"
While Randle can certainly help a contender this season for the playoffs, a team might not be willing to mortgage their future for a player they might not be able to re-sign in the offseason.
This season, Randle has played very well for the Lakers, especially as a starter. Even though minutes haven’t been all that consistent for Randle, he has been one of the most productive Lakers. During both starting and coming off the bench, Randle has averaged 13.3 points and 7.2 rebounds per game.

With his ability to score, Randle would be a good fit off the bench for a playoff team. He is able to create his own shot with his unique speed and ball-handling skills for a forward, and that has certainly been on display. We will have to wait and see what happens at the trade deadline, but not trading Randle could be an indication that the Lakers will be keeping him.
