As the Los Angeles Lakers enjoy their All-Star break, newly acquired Channing Frye had to undergo a laparoscopic appendectomy on Friday night.

Prior to the All-Star break, the Los Angeles Lakers were a bit short-handed against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Before that game, it was announced that Channing Frye would not be playing due to personal reasons.

Frye was recently acquired by the Lakers in the trade with the Cleveland Cavaliers along with Isaiah Thomas. So far this season, Frye didn’t play much with the Cavaliers, as he averaged 12.4 minutes, 4.8 points, and 2.4 rebounds per game.

At 34-years-old, Frye isn’t much more than a veteran presence at this point in his career. However, he is still a good three-pointer shoot that can stretch the floor from the power forward position.

On Friday, Frye underwent a successful laparoscopic appendectomy surgery in Cleveland, and he will be re-evaluated next week.

So far in three games with the Lakers, Frye has only played in one of them against the New Orleans Pelicans. In that game, Frye played 11 minutes and hit one three-pointer. That will likely be the extent that Frye plays with the Lakers moving forward unless a player like Kyle Kuzma or Julius Randle is out for a night. Despite the surgery, Frye was certainly in a joking mood, as he took to Twitter with a hilarious tweet.

As we head into the final weeks of the season, the Lakers will be trying to make a late push for one of the finals seeds in the Western Conference. However, more importantly, will be the development of some of their young players.

For a rookie like Kyle Kuzma, having Frye around can be very valuebale. Since the Lakers no longer have Andrew Bogut on the roster, adding a veteran like Frye is good for the young players on the team. Hopefully, Frye will be able to rejoin the team soon after his successful surgery.
