1. Paul George (SF, Oklahoma City Thunder, 2018 UFA)

Quick quote on George, coming from PG13 himself:

"“I have no regrets at all on [my comments on Los Angeles].”"

George is stuck on contending and his hometown, and I completely understand why. George is a proud Southern Californian native with a love for the team he grew up watching. If he decides to stick with Russell Westbrook by opting into his player option (since Oklahoma City is WAY over the tax bill), I wouldn’t blame him. But I would be heavily disappointed.

Why not run a starting lineup of Ball, Hart, Ingram, George, and Randle? George gives the Lakers a clear-cut scoring option at the four. PG13 adds another dimension with his athletic capabilities.

George has shown this year that he can bode well as a No. 2 option with another star and as the running man on his own. If you don’t believe me, check film reel on Indiana’s 2013-2014 run when they made two consecutive Eastern Conference Finals appearances.

So yes, George has slipped off to a degree, but playing alongside a top-three point guard who consistently racks up huge usage rating percentages and triple-doubles will do that to you.

Paul George also has refined his defensive play. It is tough to gauge since his defense has leveled off due to Andre Roberson‘s patella injury. Defense is an issue that Los Angeles has been trying to solve for years. He could be another piece to the puzzle.

I have two small issues. The first is what number he would wear. 13 is retired for the Laker great Wilt Chamberlain. He wore 24 before he switched to 13 for a nickname fit. However, Kobe Bryant wore 24. It’s an interesting topic because I’ve never personally heard from any Lakers media on what he would wear.

Second, is he going to sign with another max contract? Is the lure of Los Angeles really that attractive?

Whatever the reason, Magic should continue to pursue and persuade George to agree to a maximum contract. BUT, don’t tamper… and don’t compliment George on anything he does this season for monetary constraints. Other than that, continue to engage with the analytics department to see how George will truly fit.

Los Angeles does need stars. It could come this offseason, and PG13 is a prime candidate to put Lakers Nation back on the map.
