On Monday night, Los Angeles Lakers rookie Kyle Kuzma returned home for the first time as an NBA player and performed quite well.
Flint, Michigan native Kyle Kuzma returned to his hometown for the first time since he was drafted 27th overall in the 2017 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Lakers. Family and friends attended the Lakers game against the Detroit Pistons to watch Kuzma play. Kuzma made sure not to disappoint family and friends by putting on a fine performance.
Since being inserted into the starting lineup, Kuzma hasn’t failed to put up big performances. Last night was the fourth consecutive game where he’s scored 20 or more points. He shot an efficient 53.3 percent from the field while also shooting 33.3 percent from deep. He also grabbed 11 rebounds, recording his 5th double-double in March.
After a slow February, Kuzma has picked up his production in the month of March. According to ESPN, Kuzma is averaging 18.1 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. After being challenged by coach Luke Walton to become more of a play maker, Kuzma has made a concerted effort to crash the glass more on defense. Also, after posting a split of 37.9/31.6/75 in February, Kuzma is shooting much better in March with a split of 47/41.9/77.8.
Despite being eliminated from playoff contention with last night’s loss, Kuzma was happy to be home. He was asked about what it’s like playing in front of his hometown friends and family for the first time. He had this to say in a post-game interview.
"“It was fun. Good to see my family, friends and what not…It’s a regular game, and I treat every single game the same. I think for the most part I do that. Of course I’m at home, it’s a little bit different, but you kind of just block it out.”"
The Lakers return home after this four-game road trip. They have nine games remaining on their schedule, and only one of those games is away from Los Angeles. Though the playoffs are no longer possible for the Lakers, they should still look to continue playing hard. Rookie players Kyle Kuzma and Lonzo Ball can use all the playing time they can get to continue developing their games.
