St. Mary’s C, Jock Landale

Jock Landale spent all four of his collegiate seasons at St. Mary’s college. He only started one game his first two seasons but started all 50 games he played in the final two seasons. In those two seasons, Landale showed that he is one of the most dominant centers in college basketball.

While the competition isn’t the greatest at times in the West Coast Conference, Landale dominated. As a senior, Landale took home WCC Player of the Year and was a finalist for the Wooden Award and a semifinalist for the Naismith Award.

Landale averaged 21.1 points, 10.2 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.0 blocks per game. Landale is a dominant post player with good touch around the basket. He made 64 percent of his shots this past season and was a respectable 74.6 percent from the foul line. Landale, however, doesn’t have much range offensively. That percentage from the foul line gives hope that he can develop it if he works at it.

His face-up game is the biggest area of improvement offensively. Defensively, he is limited by his athleticism. His lack of athleticism leaves causes him to have problems defending quicker players and he is foul prone as a result.

Landale is a throwback kind of center. If you need halfcourt scoring, you won’t find too many better at providing it in this year’s draft class. If he can improve his conditioning, Landale could prove to be a steal for a team in the second round or as an undrafted free agent.
