Los Angeles Lakers: Timofey Mozgov has top-five regrettable contract
By Nick Ziegler
Bleacher Report recently named the five-worst contracts in the past five years. For the Los Angeles Lakers, they unfortunately made the list.
Prior to the Los Angeles Lakers making a change in the front office with Magic Johnson and Rob Pelinka, they made some poor decisions in free agency. One of those mistakes was signing Timofey Mozgov.
Since coming into the NBA, Mozgov has never been a great player, but he was certainly a serviceable big man. However, after playing with the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2015-16 season, Mozgov was able to get a massive contract from the Lakers.
The Lakers signed Mozgov to a four-year, $64 million deal in the offseason and left many scratching their heads at the time. As a player that averaged over 10 points per game just once in his career, this was a ton of money to give to Mozgov.
On Bleacher Report’s list of the top-five worst contracts in the last five years, Mozgov came in ranked as the fourth-worst. Considering how much he is making compared to what he has done, this is certainly warranted.
After one season with the Lakers, Mozgov was traded in a big deal with the Brooklyn Nets just prior to the 2017 NBA Draft. The Lakers had to send D’Angelo Russell with Mozgov in order for the Nets to take on his awful contract.
However, the Lakers might have won the trade as of now, as they were able to use the 27th pick they received from the Nets in order to draft Kyle Kuzma. While Russell is a very talented young guard, Kuzma had a great rookie season and made the loss of Russell an afterthought for many Lakers fans.
Despite being able to get rid of Mozgov’s contract, the Lakers certainly made a big mistake at the time. Luckily, the new front office appears to be much wiser than the one that handed out this contract to Mozgov.

After one season with the Nets, Mozgov was recently traded to the Orlando Magic this offseason. With two years left on his deal, Mozgov will continue to be one of the worst deals in the NBA.
