Los Angeles Lakers advance to Summer League championship game

The Los Angeles Lakers advanced to the Las Vegas Summer League final after defeating the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Los Angeles Lakers onslaught on the Las Vegas Summer League continued on Monday night. However, it wasn’t easy. The Cleveland Cavaliers, led by first-round pick Collin Sexton, gave Los Angeles all they could handle. Los Angeles was able to outlast them, however, winning 112-109.

With the victory the Lakers remain undefeated in summer league, running their record to 6-0. They also advanced to the Summer League Championship game with the win, the second consecutive year they will be playing for the title.

Once again it was Josh Hart and Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk leading the way for the Lakers. Both filled up the basket, as Hart scored 37 and Svi added 31.

Both players lit it up from the 3-point line. Hart shot 6-of-15 from the 3-point line and 13-of-28 from the field overall. Mykhailiuk was even better, knocking down 6-of-11 from distance and 12-of-20 overall.

While both players were impressive offensively, they did well in other facets as well. Mykhailiuk grabbed four rebounds with one assist and one steal. Hart added nine rebounds, one assist and one steal to his ledger.

In addition to Hart and Svi, the Lakers also received excellent performances from Jeff Ayers and Xavier Rathan-Mayes. They were the only two other players to score in double figures for Los Angeles tonight.

Ayers was inserted into the starting lineup when Moritz Wagner went down with an injury and has filled in well. Against the Cavaliers, Ayers scored 20 points with five rebounds, three assists and one block. Rathan-Mayes scored 12 points, including a late game-tying 3-pointer in the first overtime. He also added nine assists.

For Cleveland, it was Sexton leading the way. He scored 27 points with multiple clutch baskets in the waning moments of the game. He added three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Jameel Artis, John Holland, Billy Preston, Scoochie Smith and Vladimir Brodziansky also scored in double-figures for Cleveland.

With the victory, the Lakers are advancing onto the championship game. They will play against the winner of the game between the Memphis Grizzlies and Portland Trail Blazers. Whoever wins that game will face off with the Lakers on Tuesday, July 17th at 10 pm ET/7 pm PT.
