After agreeing to a buyout with Luol Deng, the Los Angeles Lakers have an open roster spot and they should use that spot on Nick Young.

After picking up some solid veteran playmakers and defenders in free agency, the Los Angeles Lakers hope their young core will step up and knock down 3’s this season.

After being one of the worst 3-point shooting teams last season, it would be wise to see if they can add a consistent threat from beyond the arc.

After buying out Luol Deng, the Lakers have an open spot on the roster. There’s a familiar face that would fill that role perfectly. Nick Young aka “Swaggy P”.

Why him? In the 2016-17 season, Young revitalized his career after being given a legitimate opportunity by coach Luke Walton.

The opportunity Walton gave him paid off. He was the starting shooting guard for much of the season and showed he can still contribute at a high level. He also showed he can knock down 3-pointers at a pretty impressive clip, knocking down over 40 percent of his attempts.

There are other reasons why signing Young would be a smart move. He brings a fun, positive vibe into the locker room. He played for the Lakers for four years until this past season in which he joined the Golden State Warriors.

Now he has won an NBA championship. After declaring himself “Uncle P” in reference to him now being one of the older guys on the team, and taking on a mentor role, he now has championship experience he could bring to the Lakers.

My favorite reason to sign Swaggy is the fact that he played on the Lakers with Kobe Bryant for years. Nobody on the current roster ever played alongside Kobe in a game.

Now the young’uns have the opportunity to grow alongside LeBron James, one of the greatest of all time. They also have Magic Johnson‘s ear at any time, another one of the greatest ever.

Now that Julius Randle is gone, there’s nobody on the team who could say, “I played alongside Kobe AND LeBron. I learned this from Kobe, and I learned that from LeBron”. Nick Young could be that guy.

Having someone on the team who learned winning habits from two of the greatest players of all time could be very beneficial. Trevor Ariza could also be that guy if he were available.

The Lakers need a good 3-point shooter. Young is a free agent. There is an open roster spot. Young played very well the season that Walton let him play. And, he’s funny.
