Recent Lakers rumors are that Rajon Rondo will be the starting point guard over Lonzo Ball to start the season.

With the start of the regular season getting close for the Los Angeles Lakers, recent Lakers rumors have been about the starting point guard position.

This offseason, the Lakers were able to address a major need at the point guard position by signing Rajon Rondo. Last season, the Lakers were really weak at point guard behind Lonzo Ball, and the franchise clearly recognized it with the signing of Rondo.

Rondo is coming off a good season with the New Orleans Pelicans, and he clearly still has a lot left in the tank. While many thought that he was going to be brought in to be the backup point guard for to Ball, recent reports are that he is going to be the starter to begin the season.

According to Dave McMenamin of ESPN, Rondo is going to be the starter. Here’s what he said via SilverScreenAndRoll.com.

"“Luke Walton told me today that Rajon Rondo will be the Lakers’ starting point guard to start the year. Lonzo told me he was just cleared today for full-contact practice, but Walton had already said that won’t include scrimmaging.”"

Rondo being named the starter for the beginning of the season isn’t earth-shattering news, as Ball is working his way back from a summer knee surgery. Since Ball is being eased back from the surgery, Rondo being named the starter makes sense.

While Rondo will reportedly start, the minutes distribution between the two will likely be fairly even. The Lakers are going to want to play at a very fast pace this season, and that can certainly take its toll on a point guard. Luckily for the Lakers, both Ball and Rondo are certainly capable starters, and they might push each other to perform at a higher level.

Even though being the starter is a nice thing, it is more about who finishes games in the NBA nowadays. When it comes down to crunch time in the final six minutes of the fourth quarter, who is playing will be the real indicator of the “starting” point guard. For Ball and Rondo, there is a good chance that they will both be on the court to finish games.
