Moe Wagner scores his first NBA points, as the Los Angeles Lakers blowout the Phoenix Suns in a Sunday showdown.
Throughout the season, the Los Angeles Lakers have not played very well on Sundays. With that being said, this game held a little more importance as the Lakers were looking to break their bad habit of playing on Sunday.
Lonzo Ball set the tone defensively early on as he was active on defense opening the game with a steal that led to a layup by Kyle Kuzma.
Lonzo had two steals in the first few minutes, as he continues to baffle all who criticized his defense coming into the league.
However, the turnover demon reared its ugly head once more, as the Lakers struggled to take care of the ball, which led to eight turnovers in the first quarter alone.
The Lakers looked a bit sluggish on offense to start the game and between that and the turnovers, the Lakers found themselves down by 10 after a score of 21-31 after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Lakers woke up on offense, as the entire team looked rejuvenated. In the first few minutes, Michael Beasley gave the Lakers some great minutes off the bench, as he was active in his five minutes in the quarter, including a pass to Brandon Ingram with 9:44 left in the second quarter for a wide open 3-pointer to tie the game at 31.
Lonzo continued to play excellent defense, but on offense I felt like he was rushing his shots and getting a little to reckless in transition which led to a bunch of wild shots that he was unable to convert.
While Lonzo was on the bench, Brandon Ingram played excellent being aggressive on the offensive end. He was the type of facilitator that we have seen him blossom into over the course of the last two seasons.
Ingram and Kuzma were completely in sync with one another, beautifully feeding off of each others momentum. By the quarters end, both forwards were in a nice rhythm as Ingram had 13 points at half along with the 18 points that Kuzma tallied.
KCP put the icing on a great first half for the Lakers as he drilled a 3-pointer at the buzzer to put the Lakers up 61-46.
The Lakers started off the third quarter with two quick buckets by JaVale McGee.
They continued to be fluent on offense and without Devin Booker, who left in the second quarter with a left hamstring injury, the Suns never really managed to get into a rhythm that could help them regain any sort of ground.
Throughout the third quarter, the Lakers kept their foot on the gas and never looked back.
Basically the Lakers handled their business and put this game away early. In the fourth quarter the Lakers essentially played 12 minutes of garbage time with the most exciting part of the final period being Lakers rookie Mo Wagner scoring his first NBA points on two free throws early in the quarter. The he scored his first NBA field goal on a layup with 5:00 left in the game.
Wagner finished the game with 10 points on 2-for-3 shooting from behind the arc and the Lakers destroyed the Suns 120-96.
So this was a great win for the Lakers even given the fact that the Suns were missing two of their key players.
The Lakers are now 14-9 on the season and even though most will only see this win as a scheduled blowout, it is still impressive none the less.
Hopefully, the Lakers can keep this momentum going as the Lakers will now face the San Antonio Spurs in back-to-back games that will prove critical to the development of this Lakers team.
