Los Angeles Lakers guard, Rajon Rondo, recently talked about the Lakers discussing a multi-year deal this past summer.
This past summer was a very busy one for the Los Angeles Lakers. To start things off, the Lakers were able to make a huge splash by landing LeBron James.
The goal all summer was to sign a superstar in the offseason, and they were able to accomplish that by signing James. However, the Lakers were not able to land a second star last summer to play along with James, and instead adding a bunch of veterans on one-year deals.
One of the veterans that the Lakers signed was Rajon Rondo. As a veteran with championship experience, Rondo figured to be an excellent backup point guard to Lonzo Ball, and also could provide the team with more leadership.
Rondo signed a one-year, $9 million deal with the Lakers this summer. However, he recently talked to Dave McMenamin of ESPN.com about the two sides discussing a multi-year deal.
"”We talked about it,” Rondo said. “As far as long term, maybe not like a six-year deal, but you know, I’m only 33.”"
While the two sides might have discussed a multi-year deal, it likely wasn’t for much more than two years. The Lakers have been trying to keep as much cap space as possible free, and signing Rondo to a multi-year deal would have hurt that.
Despite Rondo having a good season with the New Orleans Pelicans last season, he wasn’t able to have that same impact for the Lakers this season. While the numbers don’t look bad for Rondo on offense, his defense has not been good this season.
Due to injuries to Lonzo Ball, Rondo has logged more minutes this season than the Lakers likely would have liked. Over the summer, it will be interesting to see what the Lakers do with Rondo.
In the interview, Rondo said that he would like to come back to the Lakers. However, it is unknown whether or not the Lakers have him in their plans for next season.
