With the Los Angeles Lakers’ season coming to an end, one of the big questions facing Rob Pelinka and whoever takes over for Magic Johnson is whether they should re-sign JaVale McGee and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope this summer.

The Los Angeles Lakers front office is going to have a busy offseason. Their main priority is going to be trying to sign a superstar free agent like Kevin Durant, Kawhi Leonard, or Kyrie Irving, but with only seven players under contract through next season, Rob Pelinka and their new President of Basketball Operations, are also going to have to focus on filling out the Purple and Gold’s roster.

The Lakers don’t have a center signed for next season, so it seems logical that they’ll give JaVale McGee a hard look when they start trying to find players to help man the middle.

Similarly, the Lakers only have one player under contract next season at shooting guard, Josh Hart. So, during the summer, the front office will also have to consider bringing back Kentavious Caldwell-Pope as the Lakers starting shooting guard or as the backup to Hart.

JaVale McGee and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope play different positions on the court and they have diverse styles of play, but they’ve both displayed some eerily similar statistical patterns throughout the season.

Let’s examine the data and come to a conclusion about whether the Lakers should keep them under contract next season or if the Purple and Gold should allow them to move on to another team.
