Lakers’ guard, Bullock, grew up with his transgender sister, Mia Henderson, and practiced acceptance and understanding of being unique and embracing differences.
Tragically in the summer of 2014, Henderson was murdered for choosing to be herself. Her death led Bullock to take action and stand up for others like her.
This year Bullock was very active working with the LGBTQ community to make a change. As a partner with Athlete Ally, he and the group worked together to defeat South Dakota House Bill, HB 1225. The bill called for students participating in school activities to join based on their birth certificate genders, and not their identifying gender. The bill was killed in February.
Also in February, Bullock changed his NBA All-Star break vacation plans to fly home to North Carolina and work with the Time Out Youth Center. He met with both students and allies of the community center; it provides a safe space for LGBTQ youth in Charlotte, NC. He made the visit in an effort to continue his education as a straight male on what LGBTQ youth experience on a daily basis.
Prior to joining the Lakers, Bullock has been involved with GLAAD, speaking at their awards ceremony, sitting down for community forums, participating in Spirit Day and donating money. GLAAD is an LGBTQ founded group that monitors the media.
In June 2018, he and his son rode on a float in the New York City pride parade. Bullock has been and will continue to advocate for the LGBTQ community, making a huge impact as an ally.
The winner of the Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian Award will receive $100,000 to put toward their charitable efforts, the remaining nominees will NBA players have won previously, Bullock will be the first Laker if he wins.
Nominated alongside Bullock is Chris Long (NFL), Yadier Molina (MLB) and Sloane Stephens (Tennis). The winner will be announced on July 9.
