Los Angeles Lakers biggest offseason mistake is Jerry West

The Los Angeles Lakers did a solid job this offseason, but not bringing Jerry West back into the fold has bitten them.

While I honestly am impressed about how well the Los Angeles Lakers front office did so far in the offseason, and I agree that waiting out Kawhi Leonard was the right course to take, I have to point out that the biggest mistake they made was to not hire Jerry West back.

He wanted to come back and he got blown off; huge error. I said all along that we needed a heavy hitter on board, also said I would be more than happy to eat crow and be proved wrong.

Not saying Rob Pelinka handled things wrong or did a bad job. Was all ready to throw that crow on the bar-b-que and chow down, they taste like chicken ya know. To a point, I am still ready to concede that we did better than I would have guessed when the season ended.

But, let’s face it, kids, Jerry West and the Clippers got the better of us. Well, along with KL himself if he had been plotting this all along as I am reading. It’s pretty revealing when you take into consideration that his people asked the Lakers to hold off on the AD signing for a couple of hours while he was supposedly still making up his mind.

Looks more like he wanted to make sure the PG-13 trade was happening before he committed one way or the other. I was one of those who never saw this turn of events coming. What a shocker.

As they say, oh well. The Lakers are going to be okay in any case and probably this is better for the league as a whole. Certainly evens things out more than if KL would have signed with us. And certainly makes for an interesting battle for Los Angeles, as well as the Western Division of the NBA. What a shift in power. On top of that, Utah also got way better. This is gonna be a wild and crazy year in the West.

So, in conclusion, I am not cookin’ up the crow as of yet. But, that said, I got it in the freezer ready to go in the event that we make it to the finals. Rob and Jeannie didn’t do that bad on their own. But not bringing back the logo was a bit of arrogance that proved costly. And I still contend that we need a real solid, and experienced, basketball person in the FO lineup. Time will tell.

My offseason grade for the Lakers is an A-.  Very good, but will it be good enough? I hope so. I wanna win and win now.
