The Los Angeles Lakers had a rough go at it during the 2019 Las Vegas Summer League, but Devontae Cacok shined on the court.

The Los Angeles Lakers finish the Las Vegas Summer League with a record of 1-4. However, there were a couple of players who shined.

The Lakers did not win many games at the Las Vegas Summer League, but they did defeat the Golden State Warriors in their final game. They were down 57-33 at halftime against Golden State, but they came back and won the game 88-87.

Although the Lakers could not rack up many wins, we did see a lot of talent on the basketball court. A couple of Laker players who showed out during the summer were Devontae Cacok, Jordan Caroline, Zach Norvell Jr., Codi Miller-McIntyre, and Nick Perkins. Honorable mentions go to Aric Holman and Jordan Howard.

Devontae Cacok is the Lakers Summer League MVP. He averaged 11.8 points, on 62.3% shooting, nine rebounds, 1.2 assists and two steals per game. Cacok is a two-way player. He gives it his all when on the basketball court on the defensive offensive end. If he forms an outside game, he will be tough to guard.

Cacok reminds me of Montrezl Harrell. An energy guy who does not give up, and plays hard as long as he is on the basketball court. If the Lakers give Cacok an opportunity in the NBA, he will show his teammates, fans, and the front office what he’s made of.

He will need to develop in the G League and showcase his talent in order to be called up to the NBA, but I have no doubt that he will do just that.

The Lakers have LeBron James, Anthony Davis, DeMarcus Cousins and quality veterans. You may be asking, where does Cacok fit? Why would the Lakers need him?

The Lakers need an energy player, who does not give up. He averaged two steals per game in the Las Vegas Summer League, and although he is shorter than others at the center position, at 6’7″ he is showing that heart is more important than height in basketball.

Cacok would be a good fit on the Lakers, and I do not doubt that he will prove himself in the G League as he proved himself, and made a name for himself, in the Las Vegas Summer League.

I had an opportunity to interview Cacok about three weeks ago and asked him, “What are your goals/biggest goal to achieve in the Summer League?” Cacok said, “My biggest goals for summer league is just making a name for myself and making a statement, I want to to help my team in any way that I can for us to win and I’ll do all of that while playing as hard as I can.”

He did exactly that. He made a name for himself, made a statement, helped his team and definitely played as hard as he could.
