1. The Lakers may simply be more motivated than the Clippers

Last year, the Lakers, especially their supporting cast were the “Meme Team.” This year, it should have a different feel, especially after last year’s debacle of a season.

It was the first time LeBron had missed the playoffs since George W Bush was president. He will have six months to get his body and mind right, and I’m sure he’s not happy about all the not-so-flattering things that have been written about him in recent months. As he nears the end of his prime, it seems like he’ll come back with a vengeance and make some people eat their words.

In addition, Kuzma, McGee, Caldwell-Pope, Rondo and Caruso are the holdovers from last season’s team. I’m sure they’re looking forward to redeeming themselves as a unit.

Anthony Davis has been scheming for months to join the Lakers. He’s only 26 and had very limited success in New Orleans. This is his chance to validate his immense talent and join the Lakers’ incredible lineage of Hall of Fame big men: Mikan, Chamberlain, Abdul-Jabbar, O’Neal and Gasol

Cousins also has a lot to prove. Other than a concussion, an Achilles tear is the most devastating injury an athlete can have, especially a basketball player. Most players who have suffered that injury turned out to be damaged goods. Cousins also has a reputation as a coach-killer and all-around knucklehead. If he plays well this season, he could very well resurrect what was once a really productive career.

The Clippers? They overachieved last season, and often times it is hard to duplicate, let along surpass that the next season for young players.

I can see George being motivated, and in some ways I can see Leonard being motivated. But how motivated will the former Spur and Raptor really be the season after winning his second NBA championship and Finals MVP?

Overall, it’s hard to see the Clippers being more motivated as a unit than the Lakers.

Nevertheless, it should be a fun and edgy matchup all season long.
