Recent Lakers rumors are that they will be reportedly working out Marreese Speights on Friday.
After the injury to DeMarcus Cousins, there has been no shortage of Lakers rumors about who the team will be trying to get in order to replace him.
Earlier in the week, it was reported that the Lakers would be working out a few of the options to fill the void at center. One of the names mentioned in that report was Marreese Speights.
Speights is a good tough veteran that can provide the Lakers with a viable option as a backup center. According to Alex Kennedy, Speights will be getting a workout with the Lakers on Friday.
Speights didn’t play in the NBA last season, but has been able to have a solid career prior to that. He is probably best known for his time with the Golden State Warriors, as he was a solid role player on their strong teams.
In his final season with the Warriors in the 2015-16 season, Speights averaged 7.1 points in 11.6 minutes per game. As a bench player, Speights is able to score very quickly and efficiently. For a backup center, Speights would be able to come off the bench and provide the Lakers with a decent little punch off the bench.
Speights has also developed a bit of a game from beyond the arc, as he attempted over four 3-pointers per game in the 2017-18 season.
Prior to not playing in the NBA last season, Speights played for the Orlando Magic, who were coached by Frank Vogel. Since Vogel is the new coach of the Lakers, there is some familiarity for Speights with the Lakers.
As a fairly durable player throughout his career, Speights would be a nice backup for the Lakers. Being able to score off the bench will be something welcomed with the loss of Cousins, as it could be a potential issue for the bench unit.
With his first workout on Friday, we will have to see what type of impression Speights makes on the Lakers. There are some bigger names that the Lakers will be working out, but Speights will be getting a crack at filling the void.
