We’ll explore three different lineup options that Frank Vogel should use during varying in-game situations throughout the upcoming season for the Los Angeles Lakers.

During the 2018-2019 season, Luke Walton used 835 different 5-man lineups for the Los Angeles Lakers.

Out of the multitude of lineups used last year, with the dozens of different Lakers players working collectively in numerous roles, competing against hundreds of opponents, the three groups of men who had the highest net rating last season for the Purple and Gold were unexpected.

  • M. Muscala, R. Bullock, A. Caruso, I. Bonga, J. Williams: +14 net rating
  • L. Stephenson, M. Muscala, A. Caruso, J. Williams, J. Jones: +11 net rating
  • R. Rondo, J. McGee, B. Ingram, J. Hart, S. Mykhailiuk: +10 net rating

In the game of chess, there are only six different pieces, but there are millions of separate routes a match can go. Similarly, every basketball game is a complicated event. Each team typically plays between eight to twelve players throughout a contest, but there are thousands of varying possibilities during a game. That means every time a squad takes the floor; there will be distinctive results.

Next season it will be Frank Vogel’s job to learn all of the different player permutations for the Lakers and to insert the correct lineups at the precise times.

Nobody can predict which players will form into a cohesive unit and work well off each other,  but we’ll evaluate several Lakers players’ strengths and assess which men should blend nicely together.
