Rob Pelinka recently stated that he consulted with LeBron James and Anthony Davis about most free agency moves for the Los Angeles Lakers this summer.

After a disappointing 2018-19 season, this was going to be a big summer for the Los Angeles Lakers.

While the Lakers were able to get their first star in LeBron James last summer, the goal was to always pair him up with a second star. To start the summer, the Lakers addressed that need quickly.

After failing to acquire Anthony Davis during the season last year, Rob Pelinka was able to get the job done with the new front office of the New Orleans Pelicans. With Davis and LeBron on the roster, the Lakers have one of the best duos in the NBA.

Since the Lakers traded most of their young core for Davis, the roster had a lot of holes that needed to be filled. On Media Day, Pelinka talked about the conversations he had with James and Davis about free agents. Here’s what he had to say via Anthony Irwin of Silver Screen and Roll.

"“(LeBron) was locked in. I mean, it was numerous phone calls, usually three-way phone calls with LeBron, myself and Anthony. Three-way text messages but incredibly focused and open-minded. The approach is never ‘you need to go do this,’ it’s always, ‘hey, what do you think about this,’” he told reporters at media day Friday."

While some might not like a general manager asking his players about roster moves, that is just the way the game is played now. Davis and LeBron are two of the best players in the NBA, and they certainly know what works and doesn’t work for them.

Compared to last summer, this summer looks a lot better on paper. Despite missing out on Kawhi Leonard, the Lakers were able to add a lot of quality depth. That depth can also play defense and shoot three-pointers, which will be a welcomed.

Getting the opinions of LeBron and Davis should come as no surprise to anyone. After some of the failures of the front office last season after the signing of LeBron, this summer has resulted in a team that looks a lot better for James to succeed.

While we will have to wait to see how everything shakes out for the Lakers, this team has the potential to do a lot this season. Pelinka has clearly prioritized having a good relationship with James and Davis, and that can only be good for the team moving forward.
