When it was announced in early July that Rajon Rondo had agreed to a two-year, $5.18 million contract to remain with the Los Angeles Lakers in July, some fans of the Purple and Gold were up in arms.
To them, Rondo is straight garbage and has no place on a team that has a real chance of winning the NBA championship.
There have also been a smaller group of Lakers fans who have argued that Rondo should be in the starting lineup, by virtue of his skill sets and his resume.
The cold hard truth is different, though. Rondo can still bring plenty of value to a team of that caliber, although there is at least one facet of the game in which he has shown a noticeable drop-off in.
There’s an old saying that you’re not as good as you seem on your best days, and not as bad as you seem on your worst days.
Rondo is not the elite point guard he once was when he played with the Boston Celtics several years ago, especially when they battled the Lakers for the world championship twice, in 2008 and 2010.
But he’s still a viable option for a team that needs more than just 3-point shooting from their main rotation guards.
