Recent Lakers rumors are that they are the front-runner to sign Markieff Morris after his buyout from the Detroit Pistons is complete.

With the buyout period of the NBA in full swing, there have been plenty of Lakers rumors about potential additions for the team.

The Lakers decided to stay put at the trade deadline this season, despite rumors about them looking to improve. Due to a lack of assets, making a major move was going to be difficult for the Lakers.

However, the buyout market has been pretty strong so far this season, as some of the non-playoff teams buy out the contracts of veterans so they can sign with contenders. Despite some good players already being bought out, the Lakers haven’t been able to sign anyone.

That all might be changing. According to Shams Charania, the Lakers are the front-runners to sign Markieff Morris, who will be bought out by the Pistons.

The addition of Morris would certainly be a good one, and also one that would add some life to the Clippers/Lakers rivalry. At the trade deadline, the Lakers were very interested in Marcus Morris. However, the Clippers had a more appealing offer for the New York Knicks, and were able to complete the trade.

Like his brother, Markieff is having a solid season. This season, Morris is averaging 11 points in about 22 minutes per game. He has the ability to space the floor as well, as he is shooting just under 40 percent from the 3-point line.

Adding a player like Morris would give the Lakers some more quality depth along with a 6’8” forward that can space the floor for LeBron James. As a good role player, the Lakers will surely not be the only contender interested in Morris, but they can provide him with a chance to win a title this season.

If we end up getting a Lakers/Clippers matchup in the playoffs, we could very well see the Morris twins battling it out off the bench.
