2. Dwight Howard
Now, you may be asking how Dwight Howard, a center, is impacted by Dion Waiters, a guard. The answer is small ball.
The Lakers have had some issues defending teams that go small. If they want to truly counteract opponents doing so, they have the ultimate weapon in Anthony Davis. Davis prefers to playing power forward, but if it means the team having a better chance to win, he will play center.
Moving Davis to center means fewer minutes for Howard. The two moves that the Los Angeles Lakers have made in the buyout market have both been to improve their small-ball lineups. Markieff Morris can play in the frontcourt alongside Davis and Waiters gives them yet another backcourt option to use should they go small.
Howard has already begun seeing his minutes scaled back recently. He has had a great comeback season during his second tenure in the purple and gold, but he could continue seeing his minutes cut back as the team finalizes their potential playoff rotation.
With another potential ball-handler at his disposal in Waiters, Frank Vogel has yet another player he can work into his small-ball lineups, giving him more versatility.
