Lakers Rumors: Jared Dudley may have insight to NBA’s return and more
By Ronald Agers
How about this for Lakers rumors: some of the NBA players (Lakers too?) may have to refund money to the owners.
The one thing that NBA fans can believe is that both the owners and players both want the NBA to continue. According to a report from CNBC, both sides have money to lose. It seems that the NBA players that got upfront payments on their contract could be obligated to pay back team governors.
"“The repayments will hit hardest for players who receive their paychecks on a six-month cycle, who receive more money per pay cycle but don’t get checks during the off-season,” CNBC reported. “Teams often use advances to lure free agent players to sign deals sooner, at times offering full or partial payment of contracts upfront.”"
Well don’t fret Lakers fans, the Lakers rumors say Anthony Davis and LeBron James will be all right. Here’s a name that will shock you, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. If Rich Paul represents you, more than likely you will get your money, rain, sleet or snow. Take a look at the tweet below. Here’s the difference between most of the NBA and the three Lakers players.
In short, these nine players got 90% of their salary paid by April 1, which will increase because the players got another paycheck on April 15th.
However, if the 2019/20 NBA season is canceled, teams and players will miss close to 25 percent of the season depending on how many games they played. This would become a nightmare for team owners, which led to the possibility of triggering this ‘Force Majeure’ clause. Here’s what this means according to ESPN.
"Force Majeure allows for a withholding of 1/92.6 of a player’s seasonal salary per canceled game based upon catastrophic circumstances. The provision encompasses several scenarios including war, natural disasters and epidemics/pandemics."
CNBC quoted an agent about the NBA’s option to try to halt 50 percent of the players’ remaining pay “until the completion of the league’s 2019-20 accounting, which is expected in early July.”
How serious is this?
This is C.J. McCollum, the Vice President for the NBA players association. If anyone would know what is going on behind the scenes it would be him along with Chris Paul, the President. Many also forget the long-term ramifications here. Based on the stoppage, there will be a drop in the salary cap for next season due to lost revenues of not only this pandemic but the losses of the China market due to the Daryl Morey tweet during the preseason.
If you think the owners aren’t feeling the pinch, you would be wrong. It seems the Los Angeles Lakers are making moves as well.
