Los Angeles Lakers: The most likely drafted position in 2020 NBA Draft
By Jason Reed
3. Shooting guard
The thing about the shooting guard position in today’s NBA is that in most cases it is essentially interchangeable with the small forward position. While there are concrete two guards in the league, such as James Harden, most role-playing two-guards essentially could be called small forwards as well.
That is kind of what Danny Green is. He is listed as the team’s starting shooting guard but with LeBron essentially being the point guard, it makes Avery Bradley essentially be the shooting guard and Green essentially be the small forward.
The NBA is as positionless as it has ever been, and having LeBron James on the roster definitely adds to that.
The reason why there is a higher chance of taking a traditional two-guard in the 2020 NBA Draft, though, is because Green or KCP could essentially be the team’s ‘backup’ small forward, opening the door for the Lakers to draft a traditional guard that can shoot the rock.
It is a small difference, but drafting a traditional two-guard potentially gives the team more options to draft someone who could do the things that a small forward could do but might be slightly undersized to be a three right away.
Think Josh Hart. Josh Hart is getting minutes as a small forward on the New Orleans Pelicans but coming out of college he was a two-guard for the Lakers, who essentially did all the same things but matched up against opposing guards instead of forwards as he transitioned to the NBA.
