Los Angeles Lakers veteran minimum guard targets: 3. Courtney Lee

Out of the three guards that we tabbed as potential targets for the Los Angeles Lakers with the veteran minimum exception, Courtney Lee would absolutely have the most one-dimensional role. While Bellinelli and Barea have tangible experience that could extend past the box score, Lee’s number one trait would make him a one-trick pony.

He would be a three-point shooter off the bench. Like Quinn Cook now and Troy Daniels before he was released, Lee would be someone who only plays a handful of minutes, gets 2-3 shots up per game and scores 3-9 points on a nightly basis.

Again, that is all the Los Angeles Lakers really need out of a signing like this in the offseason. The team simply needs to add as much depth as possible to give more options for the playoff rotation next year. Lee does not have to be anything special.

That is the role that Lee already has this season. With Dallas, Lee is averaging 14.4 minutes per game and is shooting 44.7 percent from beyond the arc in exactly two attempts per game.

Lee is a potential diamond in the rough candidate as well. He has not been able to stay on the court for extended periods of time the last four seasons and if he comes to Los Angeles, and has a consistent, yet small, role with a contending team then that could pay huge dividends for his career. Just look at Dwight Howard.

And at the very worst, he is someone who comes in when games are essentially already over and can be relied upon to hit three-point shots as well as his free throws. For a veteran minimum signing, there is nothing wrong with that.
