Los Angeles Lakers: Potential 2020 offseason blueprint
Los Angeles Lakers’ blueprint, step four: Sign Goran Dragic
With the Miami Heat moving in a new direction with Kendrick Nunn at point guard, it seems that Dragic’s time with the Miami Heat could be coming to an end.
The Miami Heat’s loss could potentially be the Los Angeles Lakers gain.
Understandably, the Heat are rocking with Kendrick Nunn and Tyler Herro at the guard positions going forward, they are the future of the team at their respective positions and getting them as much time together on the court going forward to develop chemistry benefits the Miami Heat in the long run.
The purple and gold offer Dragic the opportunity to be a starting point guard in the NBA again.
While numerous organizations can offer Dragic the same opportunity, few teams are better placed than the Lakers to win championships next season.
With the Milwaukee Bucks they have Eric Bledsoe, with the Boston Celtics Kemba Walkers, with the Los Angeles Clippers Patrick Beverley, with the 76ers Ben Simmons, with the Brooklyn Nets and Golden State Warriors they have Kyrie Irving and Steph Curry respectively.
In short, most of the championship contenders in the NBA are set at the point guard position.
While other teams can offer Dragic more money, Dragic is at a point in his career where he has made over $120m in his career, finishing his career as an NBA champion might be more important to him now than a couple of million more from another team.
In Goran Dragic the Lakers get the absolute perfect compliment to the roster they currently have constructed.
Dragic can shoot the 3-ball at an incredibly effective rate (37.7% this season), he assists the ball at an extremely healthy rate (5.1APG this season), and if you need Dragic to score he can also do that at a solid rate (16.1PPG this season).
Dragic wouldn’t be expected to lead the squad in scoring, assists, steals, or even minutes. LeBron James would continue to be the main assist guy, Dragic would have players like Alex Caruso and maybe Avery Bradley capable of playing minutes throughout the season to save Dragic for the playoffs.
He would get a lot of open looks with the likes of LeBron James, Anthony Davis, DeMarcus Cousins, and Zach LaVine on the court.
Next season is the perfect time for Dragic to join the Los Angeles Lakers.
His blend of experience, 3-point shooting, and reliability at the point guard position gives the purple and gold the perfect person to start beside LeBron next season.
