3. February 23rd, 2020, Boston Celtics at Los Angeles Lakers – 2 point win against a top Eastern team

This Sunday morning showdown was on the big stage as the featured nationally televised game, and it did not disappoint one bit. Every NBA fan recognizes the Lakers versus Celtics rivalry, and every game between them is a big one.

Also, for the first time in about five seasons, this rivalry actually has a competitive balance once again and has two teams that could potentially win their respective conferences. That is why it was pretty disappointing as a Lakers fan to see them lose by 32 points in their worst loss of the season against the Celtics the first time the two teams met up in January.

This time around it was a different story and it was evident from the Lakers’ hot start that they wanted this win even more than usual. The Lakers got off to a 28 to 19 lead at the end of the first quarter, but by the time the first half was over the Celtics were only down by two points.

The game was tight the rest of the way and it felt like the last team with the ball was going to win the game. However, it turned out to be a stop on defense that won the Lakers the game.

After AD missed a free throw that would have given the Lakers a three-point lead, the Celtics had the ball with a chance to tie or win the game. Then Kentavious Caldwell-Pope unexpectedly made the play of the game by drawing an offensive foul on Jayson Tatum, and even after the play was reviewed, the call stood and the Lakers won the game.

Tatum actually had one of the best games of his career and put up his career-high with 41 points, but he could not get the last three points that they needed for the victory. It is funny to look back and think that a Kuzma over Tatum debate once existed among some Lakers fans, but Kuzma actually had one of his better games with 16 points off the bench and was a plus 17 to help offset Tatum’s big night.
