Los Angeles Lakers news: A Magic Johnson documentary is coming to a screen near you.
NBA fans were infatuated with “The Last Dance,” the ESPN documentary highlighting the 1997-98 Chicago Bulls season that also outlined Michael Jordan’s rise to dominance in the NBA. Another documentary is in the works as well, which is very exciting Los Angeles Lakers news.
According to an email press release sent out by Jade Umbrella, Andre Cleveland Entertainment and David Arquette’s XTR Productions will be co-producing a documentary on Magic Johnson that not only follows his basketball career, but his off-the-court career as well.
"“Sports & Entertainment impresarios Andre’ Cleveland Entertainment (ACE) Network recently persuaded five-time NBA World Champion Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson to partner with David Arquette’s XTR Productions to co-produce a full-length documentary based on Magic’s extraordinary life on and off the basketball courts.”"
Magic is one of the most, if not the most, polarizing athletes to create an extensive documentary on. Not only is he one of the greatest basketball players of all-time and helped revolutionize the NBA alongside Larry Bird in the 1980s, but his off-court career has been just as polarizing.
His HIV announcement and retirement in 1991 sent shockwaves throughout the sports world and he soon became a figurehead for the disease, helping remove the stigmas around the disease and moving the world forward in the process.

Johnson has been more than just an activist, though. He has become a savvy businessman in and outside of the sports landscape. He is currently a minority owner and the figurehead of the ownership group of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Johnson also has an ownership stake in both the Los Angeles Sparks and LAFC.
Heck, in 2004, Johnson even purchased 30 Burger King locations.
He has had his hands in the operations side of basketball as well, recently serving as the Lakers President of Basketball Operations for just over two calendar years before resigning in April of 2019 in an impromptu press conference.
Lakers news: This might not be the only Lakers documentary
There is also another documentary that is in the works surrounding Kobe Bryant’s last season with the Los Angeles Lakers. Bryant reportedly had an extensive camera crew following him around during his last season and Magic Johnson himself even confirmed that the documentary is happening.
The two most iconic players in Los Angeles Lakers are getting separate documentaries made about them. The timetable is still unclear but there is one thing that we know for certain.
Laker fans have a lot to look forward to.
