Los Angeles Lakers: No, a Seth Curry trade probably isn’t happening
By Jason Reed
The Los Angeles Lakers trading for Seth Curry is a far-fetched idea.
The Los Angeles Lakers‘ primary focus right now is the NBA season resuming as planned and getting a chance to contend for championship number 17 and not feel like something more was left on the table.
However, the front office is still going to need to prepare beforehand for the upcoming offseason. There is an old saying that if you are not getting better then you are getting worse and the Lakers should look to improve in the offseason in any way possible.
It is important that the front office looks ahead and prepares ahead of time as well as the offseason is going to be a sprint. If the Lakers make the NBA Finals, there will around a month until the team is back in action in training camp for the 2020-21 season.
Trading is certainly on the table and various different outlets and sportswriters (myself included) have proposed a myriad of trades that the Los Angeles Lakers could look to make. One notable idea has the Lakers landing sharpshooting guard Seth Curry, in a deal that just does not make a lot of sense.
Greg Swartz of Bleacher Report put together one trade that every single NBA team should look to make this offseason, with the Lakers’ being to add Seth Curry. Curry would be a fantastic addition to the team and the Lakers should inquire on him to see if he is available.
The problem is that a trade for Curry, at least this trade in particular, is pretty far fetched.
Why the Los Angeles Lakers trading for Seth Curry is far-fetched:
If the Dallas Mavericks were to offer this trade to the Los Angeles Lakers then the Lakers should accept this offer 10 times out of 10. This deal is so heavily-sided to the Lakers and the Mavericks would never agree to this.
While it is fun to meme Alex Caruso and he is a fan-favorite, he is not as good of a player as Seth Curry. Curry is a bit more one-dimensional, but he is one of the best shooters in the league and alongside LeBron James would be absolutely lethal.
Caruso does not add antyhing to the Dallas Mavericks.
The Mavericks do have to figure out the center position as both of their centers are free agents but that solution is not going to be trading Curry for McGee. They can get someone off the free-agent market that will produce for Dallas just as much as McGee would.
Plus, McGee would have to agree to this as he has a player option. Why would he leave a big market and a better contending team to go play in Dallas for one year? He wouldn’t.
That 2023 second-round pick is a moot point. It is a filler pick that is three years in the future that has no real value right now.
This trade would never happen in a million years, and if it did, Mavericks general manager Donnie Nelson would instantly be on a scorching red hot seat.
