Los Angeles Lakers vs San Antonio Spurs: Gregg Popovich’s Last Stand

Rumor has it that Gregg Popovich might go to Brooklyn to coach Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant in the quest for one last championship. I disagree. Pop has nothing left to prove as a coach. I think he will retire from coaching after next season and run for Texas Governor in 2022.

He recently blasted Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) for mishandling the COVID-19 pandemic and has repeatedly disparaged President Trump’s leadership throughout his term. He has a chance to win as a Democrat in an otherwise Republican state due to his military background and successful coaching pedigree. Pop has the bipartisan appeal other Democratic candidates do not have.

Regardless of what his future holds, his coaching tenure in San Antonio is nearing the end. The Spurs have nowhere near enough talent to win a championship. I predict he will hand over the reins to Becky Hammon and then announce his candidacy for governor.

But can they still give the Lakers a run for their money today? No. LaMarcus Aldridge is out. That is a wrap. The Spurs will muster up one close game but their dynasty has been over for years. I cannot in good faith predict the Spurs will win a single game in this series. Lakers sweep easily.

Prediction: Los Angeles Lakers win 4-0
