The potential pivot

If Buddy Hield’s potential tenure in Los Angeles revealed productive and desirable, unloading him at the end of the season to a team with unused cap space and in search for star power could be easier than expected.

He could possibly be involved as well in a potential sign-and-trade with the Milwaukee Bucks, if Antetokounmpo reached an agreement with the Los Angeles Lakers.

But all this depends on the imponderable and volatile outcome of a season. It is hard to base a strategy on such unpredictable events.

Every doubt would be removed for Pelinka if, as it was rumored some month ago, in the renegotiation that will need to take place soon, an amnesty clause was included in the new CBA. This would solve any problem for the Los Angeles Lakers.

They would have the flexibility to trade for Hield and, in case Antetokounmpo agrees to a deal, simply amnesty him, getting his salary off the books.

The ideal scenario for LA. They would find themselves in a safe position, securing a young promising player with the chance to upgrade over him with the league MVP.

Unfortunately, ‘ideal’ does not mean ‘certain’. Owners and players will have to agree on adding the clause, and it is not guaranteed they will discuss the possibility at all.

Bottom line, with a new championship on their desk, the Los Angeles Lakers must now celebrate and enter next season believing they are the best team in the NBA and the favorite to win another one. What comes next and what the better course of action is must be considered ancillary to the present roster and objectives.
