Dennis Schröder

Fans of the Los Angeles Lakers were spoiled during the showtime era. Kareem, Worthy, and of course Magic Johnson.

Since the days of Magic Johnson, the purple and gold have been chasing their next star point guard.

During the Kobe Bryant days (RIP), it wasn’t a problem, you had Kobe, you didn’t need a star point guard, but before and after Kobe, the Lakers have been searching for that guy.

In recent years we have had D’Angelo Russell, Jordan Clarkson, and Lonzo Ball who were considered potential long-term options at the position, none of which are on the Lakers roster anymore.

This past offseason, in a bold trade that caught the league by surprise, Rob Pelinka traded for German point guard Dennis Schröder.

The former OKC playmaker has been a breath of fresh air on the Lakers roster.

He brings the perfect combination of speed, defensive intensity, and playmaking that allows for the purple and gold to run efficiently when LeBron James is not on the court.

Coming off of a season in which he was the runner-up for 6th Man of the Year, Schröder staked his claim for the starting point guard spot early on and has not let go of the position since day one.

While Schröder has been a delight for the purple and gold, the Lakers have found it difficult to sign the young guard to an extension during the season.

Schröder should absolutely try and get as much money as possible but there will be few situations in the entire NBA that will allow for him to compete for Championships on a yearly basis and still make really good money.

If the Lakers and Schröder can come to a commonly beneficial arrangement then it should be a no-brainer.
