Former all-stars the Los Angeles Lakers could sign: Blake Griffin

The Los Angeles Lakers could have signed Blake Griffin on the buyout market this season but instead the former all-star opted for the Brooklyn Nets. That was the better decision for Griffin as the Nets are still alive in the playoffs and are undoubtedly the favorites to win the NBA Championship this season.

Griffin has impressed during his time in Brooklyn, which was the entire reason why I was pounding the table for the Lakers to sign him. Sure, he was not great recently with Detroit but he was also playing on a team he never wanted to sign with in meaningless basketball games. It was quite obvious that he would play much better when he was playing for something.

And that is exactly what he has done. Griffin is not close to being the same player that he was in his prime but he has proven to be a more-than-capable role player and is a really important veteran presence on this Nets team.

Griffin is probably going to make more than the veteran’s minimum next season and is probably going to make around the mid-level exception. That is fine for the Lakers and Grififn would absolutely be worth the MLE.

It is a little bit of a funky fit with LeBron James and Anthony Davis position-wise but if Kyle Kuzma gets traded then a rotation spot will open for Griffin to fill.
