Lakers: Why point guard is the most important position this offseason
If you go back through the wonderful history of the Los Angeles Lakers, the point guard position has always been one of the many centers of attention. Just think about all the wonderful players the Lakers have had at the position.
Magic Johnson, Jerry West, Derrick Fisher, Nick Van Exel, Steve Nash, Gary Payton and the list goes on and on. Even up to this current day when Dennis Schroder played the position last season, it is very evident that the Lakers, for the most part, have always had very talented players at that position.
With the offseason in full effect for the Lakers, it is easy to see that they have many different and important issues that they are working on.
The biggest issue that the Los Angeles Lakers must work on is the point guard position.
First off, Schroder is a free agent as we all know. The Lakers had offered him a 4-year $84 million dollar contract earlier in the season, but Schroder turned it down. Who knows if he will get a more lucrative offer from the Lakers or if one shall come from another team.
Schroder is a very multi-talented type of player that can serve the team well in many areas as we saw him do at times during this past season. That being said, I feel that a lot of people expected more than him.

Alex Caruso is also a free agent this offseason. Everyone who is a true Los Angeles Lakers fan knows Caruso quite well as he has become one of the many faces of the organization as well as one of the many true underdogs of not only the NBA but of sports overall.
We all know how talented he is when it comes to having a firm grasp of the offense as well as his hustle and heart. Caruso could be the starting point guard for the Lakers and he would be a good one too. After all, he can shoot, pass, jump, play defense and run the offense.
Talen Horton-Tucker is a young and talented work in progress who has plenty of upside. He is more of a shooting guard the way he plays the game. He is still very young and has work to do on his game.
Could he possibly be the point guard of the future? Look, stranger things have happened, right? It is very possible but I don’t see it happening only because his game is better suited for the two. He can slash to the basket well and has a very good handle on the ball but he needs to work on his shooting skills as well as his defense and his grasp of the offense.
The other question is what if the Lakers decide not to go with any of the above players and look elsewhere for a point guard. Who would it be? There are plenty of rumors about Chris Paul coming to the team but to be quite honest, I couldn’t see that happening especially the way the Suns are playing.
If they lose, Paul may want to come to the Lakers and help them to get back to the top. The Suns are a very talented young team and if they are victorious, I cannot see Chris Paul leaving.
One thing is for sure and that is that no matter who has command over the point guard position, that will person will be in a position that has held a special place in Los Angeles Lakers history.
