If there is one thing that the Los Angeles Lakers should pride themselves on is that they won an NBA Championship and were still in contention for another while playing completely different from the modern-day NBA team.

The Lakers have not bought into the three-point barrage strategy (although that did hurt the team this year and they do need to add some shooters). They play big, they slow the game down and they play elite defense.

It also helps that the team has two of the best players in the entire league in Anthony Davis and LeBron James. That allows them to focus on defense and not have to focus so much on scoring, as those two are getting you 65-70 points a night in the NBA Playoffs.

Defense is going to continue being the strong point for the Los Angeles Lakers and they could look to add to it in free agency.

The Los Angeles Lakers do not have a ton of cap space this offseason but they have enough to make some smaller moves as well as the ability to pull off a sign-and-trade or utilize things such as the mid-level exception.

While the team should be looking to add more shooters, they also will not be going against their roots and should target defensive-minded players as well. Elite defense helped the team win the championship in 2020 and it will help the team moving forward.

Luckily, the Lakers have some options in free agency. Here are the free agents that stand above their peers defensively this offseason.
