Dennis Schroder: 4 Players who made worse contract decisions
By Ronald Agers
Yes, Lakers fans…Pat Bev actually made this mistake like Dennis Schroder but in a different context!
In a deep ESPN 30 for 30 voice: What if I told you that the player that Los Angeles Lakers fans love to hate, Patrick Beverley gave away $10 million dollars to stay with a team that would sent him on a NBA trade tour…
Yes Lakers Nation, (Stop laughing!) Patrick Beverley’s rights have been passed along like a cardboard box in NBA teams’ warehouses this week. On Sunday, the Clippers traded him away along with Rajon Rondo and Daniel Oturu. Then about 48 hours later, he was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Jarrett Culver and Juancho Hernangomez.
Let’s go back a couple of years when he resigned with the Clippers.
Patrick Beverley had agreed to terms on a three-year, $40 million contract to return to the Los Angeles Clippers. But check out what he told the Los Angeles Times after the deal was done.
"“It was the right decision,” Beverley told The Times. “Of course, the human part of you wants to take as much money as you see, but all money isn’t good money. I did what was best for me and my family, and I did what was best to stay on a winning team, and I feel like I made the right decision.”"
In the video, Beverley came back because of the culture and his relationship with Lou Williams and Montrezl Harrell.
Welcome to another Lake Show Life episode of “When Keeping it Real Goes WRONG!”.
- Soon afterwards, Montrezl Harrell left the Clippers in free agency and signed with some other team in Los Angeles that will remain nameless.
- Then the Clippers sent Lou Williams out for Rajon Rondo at the trade deadline last season (Some backup guard for a championship team the year before!) that was such a big shock that Sweet Lou considered retirement!
In all it was reported by the L.A. Times that Pat “took $9-10 million less” to stay in LA.
Now Patrick Beverley is only an honorable mention in this case because at the time the Clippers were trending upward and the Sacramento Kings were a train wreck being run by then-GM Vlade Divac. If NBA had a Siberia franchise, the Kings qualified.
But Pat Bev did take about $10 million less to play with two guys that were gone by the time he was traded.
Now let’s get into the players that really lost big money. Granted Dennis Schroder lost a ton and thought that he had a shot at recouping some money with a sign and trade. Let’s talk about the Dallas Mavericks who was rumored to be interested. Years ago they handed out a big contract and this player turned it down. Read on to see who this player is…
