Los Angeles Lakers: 2 players LA must call ASAP after Trevor Ariza injury
By Jason Reed
2. Wesley Matthews
Look, Wesley Matthews was not good for the Los Angeles Lakers last season but the team does not have many options and he would still be valuable to the team. Matthews still played good enough defense for the Lakers last season and three-point shooting can be so volatile in this league so he easily could shoot better if he is taking only one three per game.
Matthews is just fine as a depth piece and is someone who is familiar with what the Lakers are trying to do. While the team has a lot of new pieces, getting players who are familiar with the system seemed to be a priority for the team this offseason. That is why Rajon Rondo and Dwight Howard are Lakers.
The only potential problem with Matthews is whether or not he would take a non-guaranteed contract. Ennis is younger and he can talk himself into playing for the Lakers for a few months and if he gets waived signing with another team.
If Matthews gets waived at midseason he might not ever play again. But then again, if he does not sign with the Lakers at this point his NBA career might be done as no teams seem to be interested in the veteran wing.
All the Lakers would need out of Matthews (or Ennis) is 12-15 minutes off the bench to help bridge the gap at forward. That is not asking a lot of either player, especially with low stakes at the beginning of the season.
While it is low stakes, it would still be very beneficial for the Lakers to make a move. The last thing the team wants is the veterans to play more minutes than they have to and the domino effect of this injury will likely lead to LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Carmelo Anthony all playing slightly more minutes.
Those minutes add up. The Lakers should just bite the bullet, spend a little bit and bring in either Ennis or Matthews.
