The Los Angeles Lakers have been very disappointing this season and it has become clear to anyone who has paid attention that the current iteration of the team cannot keep up with the top-tier contenders in the NBA. As a result, the Lakers rumors have already started months before the trade deadline.

You could be optimistic and hope that the team turns it around in time for the playoffs but the reality is that it probably needs to bring in external help. And according to the latest batch of Lakers rumors, that is exactly what the team is looking to do.

Shams Charania of The Athletic said on the Pat McAfee Show that the Lakers are very active on the trade market and two names that they are really looking into is Jerami Grant and Ben Simmons. What made this report even more compelling is the fact that Shams said he spoke to Rich Paul directly, who obviously was okay with Shams name-dropping him.

That makes this even more impactful. If Rich Paul is outright saying these things to the top NBA insider then it is clear that he, and probably LeBron James, wants to see a trade happen.

Don’t get your hopes up, though. These Los Angeles Lakers rumors are all smoke.

In my humble opinion, this is all just a ploy by Rich Paul to put pressure on the Los Angeles Lakers to make something happen. We have seen Paul and Klutch Sports use the media to get what they want (see: Anthony Davis being traded to the Lakers) and this is probably another example of that.

The Lakers can be as “active” as they want but at the end of the day, the team is not going to make an impactful trade this offseason. Could they make a smaller trade? Sure. Will they make something that puts them on that top-tier with other contenders? Probably not.

Let’s break down the three reasons why these Lakers rumors are all just smoke.
