Lakers: Russell Westbrook’s recent comments show why he’s failed in LA
By Jason Reed
Greatness has long been expected out of the Los Angeles Lakers. Several of the best players to ever play the game of basketball have donned the purple and gold. No franchise in the league has as many superstars in its history and only the Boston Celtics — thanks to Bill Russell — can say they have as many championships.
After winning the NBA Championship in 2020 and falling short due to injuries in 2021, the expectations were high for the Lakers this season. The Lakers had the best odds to win the title out of the Western Conference at the start of the season. Currently with a 27-35 record and being closer to the worst record in the league than the best, it is easy to say that this season has not met expectations.
Unless you are Russell Westbrook.
After yet another embarrassing loss to the Los Angeles Clippers — the seventh in a row by the way — Russell Westbrook told a reporter that he had “no expectations” for the 2021-22 season. After being asked about this season not going the way he envisioned, Westbrook made it very clear to the reporter asking the question that he doesn’t know what Westbrook actually envisioned before the year.
It is probably the worst look for Westbrook this season and there have been several bad looks.
Russell Westbrook is proving he is not cut out to be on the Los Angeles Lakers.
Most Laker fans have wanted Russell Westbrook off the team for months now and if someone didn’t want him off the team then this could be the final straw that breaks the camel’s back. As mentioned, greatness is expected out of the Lakers every season and for the new “star” player to say he didn’t expect anything?
Just imagine what Kobe Bryant would be saying to Westbrook if he was his teammate? This is not a winner’s mentality and while Westbrook is a talented basketball player, perhaps it has been this mentality that has kept him from winning a championship in his career despite having three separate MVP teammates.
There has been a lack of urgency with the Lakers all season and perhaps it is because the team is okay with not winning a title, or had no expectations of doing such. Perhaps Westbrook just wants to make $44.1 million and hoop, I know we all would like to do that as well.
It is disappointing, however, as it is unfair to the fans who pay their hard-earned money and spend their time supporting a team and players who didn’t even expect to have winning aspirations this season.
