Lakers news: Analyst suggests LA could discuss trading Anthony Davis
By Jason Reed
The Los Angeles Lakers news that every fan is waiting to hear is that Anthony Davis will finally make this return to the court to try and save this disappointment of a season. It appears that AD will return in early April, so there is at least some hope.
Even if Davis returns for the end of the regular season and the NBA play-in, it is hard to get overly excited about what the Lakers may do. The team is in a position where it may miss the play-in, and even if they win two do-or-die games, they would have to get past the Phoenix Suns.
They probably won’t, even if Shaquille O’Neal thinks that the Suns will lose to the Lakers if they meet in the first round.
The offseason is going to start much sooner than expected in Tinseltown and this is an important offseason as the team looks to shake this ugly season off its back and capitalize on the ever-shrinking title window with LeBron James. While Davis ditched his former agents to sign with Klutch Sports, some think that the offseason could consist of an Anthony Davis trade.
Lakers news: Brian Windhorst suggests the Lakers could discuss an Anthony Davis trade.
ESPN’s Brian Windhorst has been covering LeBron James closely in his career and typically has an inside scoop on what is going down around the King. If anyone has the authority to speak on the Lakers’ situation, it is Windhorst.
That makes his comments on ESPN’s ‘Get Up’ even more compelling. Windhorst said that he thinks an Anthony Davis trade is something that the Lakers may discuss (h/t Yahoo Sports).
Russell Westbrook is the big name that the Lakers are going to try hard to move this offseason but it would not be totally surprising if the Lakers shifted gears with Davis if the right trade was on the market. What that trade is would be completely subjective to LA, but they have reason to trade AD.
Davis cannot stay healthy and he is only getting older and that problem is only going to get worse. If the Lakers can find someone who has 90% of the ceiling of Anthony Davis but is more durable than that may be in the best interest of the team. And while AD is a Klutch Sports guy, someone like Karl-Anthony Towns may simply be a better fit alongside LeBron James.
Trading AD would also get some of Klutch’s influence off of the Lakers as the team potentially extends LeBron James this offseason. The last thing the Lakers want to happen is LeBron to not be happy, not sign an extension and then convince AD to ditch LA as soon as LeBron leaves after the 2023-24 season. We have seen how bad teams look after LeBron leaves in the past and this could be a buffer.
Will it happen? Probably not, but crazier things have happened in the NBA. It certainly would be massive Lakers news if it did.
