The cons of trading for Kyrie Irving start with the drama:

The Lakers’ front office created enough problems for themselves during the 2021-22 season. There seemed to be a divide between the front office and LeBron and the way the Lakers handled the firing of Frank Vogel had a lot of potential replacements skeptical about taking the position.

Now in the offseason, the Lakers have figured out one of their problems with finding a new coach, but they still are a couple of trades away from actually being contenders again. Adding Irving brings them closer but he also adds to their problems.

Signing Irving means dealing with the drama that comes along with him. Irving only played 29 games this past season because of his choice not to get vaccinated. Restrictions have been lifted in multiple cities, but what if they were to be put back in place because of another surge? This would mean Irving would only be able to play part-time again.

Irving also has been known to say he has no plans of leaving the organization, only to request to be traded or sign elsewhere in the offseason. His inability to commit to a team is a red flag and not something the Lakers should want to deal with right now.
