The Los Angeles Lakers aren’t done shaking up the roster quite yet. The team has decided to bring back an old friend, Dennis Schroder.

The team signed the guard to a one-year $2.64 million deal, per Shams Charania. LA has been rumored for some time to bring back Schröder, but today they made it a reality.

Grading the Los Angeles Lakers’ signing of Dennis Schroder

The 29-year-old returns to the Lake Show after playing for the team in the 2020-2021 season. In that time, the German-born guard played a total of 61 games and averaged 15.4 PPG, 5.8 APG, and 1.1 SPG. Since then, Schroder has bounced around from Boston and Houston, trying to find a stable home. Schroder is now hoping he can make Los Angeles that home, at least for this season.

He struggled to find his footing last season but still was an effective player averaging 13.5 PPG and 4.6 APG. Schroder has always been a reliable player in this league. He’s not the staple of any team or a franchise talent, but he can be a compelling piece on a contending team.

The Lakers’ backcourt is now very crowded, which raises some questions about how the team will operate. The other concern is that this team still lacks shooters from three-point range. While Schroder isn’t a bad three-point shooter, he’s not a good one either, with a career average of 33.8%.

Though he may not have been exactly what the Lakers needed, he can still be a very productive player for this team.

If Russell Westbrook is traded, he could be a secondary playmaker in the starting lineup next to LeBron James. If Schröder doesn’t end up starting, he could find himself as a great sixth man for this team.

The Lakers were able to bring in a talented player; whenever a team can do that, it’s a positive. Though it may not have been exactly what this team needed, it’s by no means a negative signing.

At the end of the day, the team got better and will look to turn it around next season. Overall this author gives the signing a solid B-. The signing is solid, but since it wasn’t a three-point specialist or even someone who is slightly above average shooting the ball, it can’t get a higher grade.
