Former Lakers C Dwight Howard finally gets an offer (but not an NBA one)
By Mike Luciano
The Los Angeles Lakers appear to have moved on from future Hall of Fame center Dwight Howard, as his services in the paint are no longer required. Father Time remains undefeated, and he appears to be coming hard after Howard in the last few years.
Howard has averaged 6.9 points and 7.3 rebounds per game over the last three years. While Howard is still an effective dunker, his poor finishing has started to ebb away at his offensive productivity. In conjunction with that decline, the offers from NBA teams have vanished as well.
A handful of established athletes, mostly former NFL players like Steve McMichael and Kevin Greene, have been able to get some limited success in pro wrestling, but it’s simply not a viable career option for many of them. Howard, with his electric personality, could be an exception.
Triple H said that Howard was “incredibly entertaining” at a WWE tryout, saying that the only obstacles in the way of him joining the promotion right now are his basketball commitments. Triple H did say that he is just a phone call away if Howard decides he wants to put the time in.
Will Dwight Howard leave the Lakers for wrestling?
Howard spent the last few months being linked to teams like the Nets, though those rumors have eventually dried up. While Howard is by no means going to be a needle-mover, there is still a chance that he can provide more of the post-excellence he’s helped LA and Philly with during the twilight of his career.
While he’s not even 10% of the player he was in Orlando, Howard can still snag rebounds at an above-average clip and block some shots every now and again. The Lakers may have coveted his veteran presence last year, but they decided to scrap him as they get younger.
Howard already has his championship, but he’s likely only interested in teams that can get him a second ring. If he doesn’t get that, we may see him and Roman Reigns going at it in primetime. We know that his body can withstand the physical beating of a wrestling schedule.
Going from being a professional athlete to a wrestler is often a move that is born out of desperation, but Howard is one of the few athletes who might be able to make that transition with some success. Due to his personality and athleticism, Howard might have the chops needed to stick in this field.
