The real reason why the Los Angeles Lakers waived Matt Ryan
By Ronald Agers
Matt Ryan was waived by the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday night. It’s not clear as of this writing on how many checks he received from this team. What is known is the Lakers did not have to pay him his first check until November 15th, 2022. Yes… this Matt Ryan!
The same guy that might have saved whatever debacle of a season this team has to this point. Think about what this season could have been if this guy doesn’t make this shot? Oh, by the way, this was only the second win of the season for the Lakers. Let that sink in.
But Matt Ryan’s waiving only highlights what is really wrong with the Los Angeles Lakers. See, the front office wants you to believe that the team is orchestrating a trade down the line. If any Lakers fan wants to believe that, there are some statues in front of Crypto.com Arena that the staff of Lake Show Life can sell you for $5,000 just in time for Christmas. Get them while supplies last.
Here are two reasons why Matt Ryan was waived by the Los Angeles Lakers.
Reason number one…
A fan hits a shot for $75,000.
Reason number two…
The Lakers tried to get slick and lower the prize money here to $25,000, but it’s still money, right?
All told this is $100,000 to be paid out. To all that can relate, if you don’t have money to pay the light bill, what do you do? You let the phone bill get cut off. Matt Ryan is the phone bill.
Get the picture?
This is why the Los Angeles Lakers are in no position to make a serious trade to get Russell Westbrook out of town. See to get rid of a contract like Russell’s, the Lakers have to be willing to take back bad contracts with multiple years attached.
Oh, and give up those two first-round picks that probably will be high lottery picks by the end of the decade. They have no choice but to keep Russ and get his salary off the books. This is not about basketball… this is big business!
What does all of this mean you ask?
The Los Angeles Lakers are cash poor (By NBA standards!) paying Anthony Davis, Russell Westbrook and LeBron James. Plus, they have to extend AD and they are financially dumb enough to extend LeBron again.
How much? Let’s break it down…
- That two-year, $97.1 million contract extension includes a player option for the 2024-25 season which he probably will decline for a possible two-year $110 million deal.
- The extension includes a 15% trade kicker. Stop asking for the Lakers to trade him. They can’t afford it!
- Even though James is ineligible for a no-trade clause because he agreed on an extension, what NBA GM who can count is going to pay the new contract’s starting salary of $46.7 million and the 15% trade kicker for a guy that’s in his 20th season and beyond?
- Meaning LeBron likely will be a Laker until Bronny is drafted.
So with all of this and they have to pay AD too being salary cap-strapped…
It’s a cold world for Matt Ryan.
