NBA legends react to LeBron James breaking all-time scoring record
By Jason Reed
It was only a matter of time. LeBron James entered Tuesday night’s game against the Oklahoma City Thunder needing 36 points to break Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s all-time NBA scoring record.
It didn’t even take four quarters for LeBron to break the record, as a fadeaway jumper over Kenrich Williams late in the third quarter gave LeBron points 35 and 36 to officially make him the greatest scorer in NBA history.
This is the most historic NBA moment of the last two decades and will likely be the most historic moment for the next four decades. Kareem’s record has stood the test of time with many believing that nobody would come close. LeBron has now surpassed it and will continue to blow by it as he continues his all-time career.
Regardless of where you fall on the GOAT debate, it was a special moment to see LeBron accomplish such a historic feat. Some of the greatest legends in NBA history were sure to shower LeBron in praise and he undoubtedly deserves it.
NBA legends react to LeBron James breaking all-time scoring record:
Magic Johnson was there both for Kareem (as a teammate) and for LeBron (first as an executive and then as a fan). Magic was courtside on Tuesday night and shared how just surreal it is to witness both Kareem and LeBron’s greatness.
Pau Gasol was also present for the game and was unable to hold his excitement for James, going with the all caps, full-name approach to his reaction.

Someone who is very familiar with LeBron James from their battles in three separate NBA Finals is Hall of Famer Manu Ginobili. Ginobili quickly shared his admiration for LeBron, giving just one word to describe him: beast.

There were also two pre-game tweets that resonate a bit harder now that LeBron has officially broke the record. Dwyane Wade proved that he can see the future by tweeting “history loading” while Kevin Garnett perfectly put the historic night into perspective.

Even though LeBron James now has the most points in NBA history, there has still been some debate about whether or not he is the greatest scorer of all time. Former Laker Matt Barnes made his opinion known, calling James the greatest scorer ever.

History like this does not come often in sports and there are very few superstars who deserve a moment like this more than LeBron James. Now let’s just hope that this can give the team some momentum to make a playoff push.
