Former Lakers flier signs with Rockets to help with tanking efforts

Many players have donned the purple and gold for the Los Angeles Lakers, especially in recent years. Los Angeles has witnessed massive roster turnover year over year as Rob Pelinka and the front office tried to recapture what made the 2020 championship team so special.

The 2021-22 season was particularly bad for the Lake Show as the team brought in a litany of veterans who simply did not work out. All the optimism around the team was completely drained months before the season actually ended as the team was punting on fliers that simply did not work out.

One of those fliers was DJ Augustin, who was billed as a shooting presence that could potentially help the Lakers off the bench down the stretch. Instead, Augustin ended up being the perfect metaphor for the Lakers season, as he did not contribute much of anything. Augustin averaged 5.3 points in 17.8 minutes per game. His 42.6% three-point rate could not make up for his horrendous defense.

Like most of the Lakers roster from last season, Augustin has been out of the league since the end of the 2021-22 season. However, the veteran guard is finally making his return to a team that LA has one more game against to end the season: the Houston Rockets.

Houston has one of the worst records in the league and this has to be viewed as the team simply getting another body in so they can take some of the workload off of the young players and commit to the tank job. Why else would you sign a veteran guard who has been unemployed if you are a bottom team?

DJ Augustin could haunt the Lakers one last time.

As mentioned, the Lakers and Rockets square off one more time before the 2022-23 season concludes. Last time these two teams faced off the Rockets pulled off the upset win while LA rested Anthony Davis on the second leg of a back-to-back.

That loss stung incredibly for Lakers fans as every single game down the stretch means something. LA cannot afford to give away games and next time the two teams square off the Lakers need to take care of business.

But knowing the Lake Show’s luck, Augustin will somehow catch fire when he plays his former team just so he can haunt them one last time. It won’t mean anything for anyone other than Augustin and LA fans and that is exactly why it will likely happen.

Or hey, who knows, maybe it will go the other way (as it should) and Augustin getting minutes on Houston will result in LA winning the game, as the team should have last time. That is all we can hope for at this point.
