The Los Angeles Lakers were already in the middle of a very difficult game against the Golden State Warriors that was trending towards a loss, but it looked like LA was just a substitution away from regrouping and getting themselves all squared away for Monday night.

That all changed when an errant Kevon Looney elbow caught star big man Anthony Davis right in the head. Davis was quickly removed from the game, likely in an attempt to check for a concussion or a more severe injury. The Lakers’ Game 5 loss to Golden State was crystallized here.

If Davis has a concussion or a serious injury, which can not be ruled out, the Lakers will likely be without their second-best player for two decisive games. The nightmare scenario that could bring an end to this magical playoff run may become a reality.

According to Chris Haynes of Bleacher Report, Davis needed to be taken off the court in a wheelchair. While this is likely for preventative measures, and a serious injury can’t be assumed, the fact he didn’t leave under his own power will raise the fanbase’s collective blood pressure.

Lakers’ Anthony Davis leaves Game 5 with head injury.

After starting the series very inconsistently, often following a terrific game with a stinker, Davis has steeled his nerves and started playing like the perennial All-Star and game-changer we saw with the Pelicans and during LA’s title run in the bubble.

While the Warriors aren’t exactly the biggest or most physical team out there, losing a player like Davis against the wily Draymond Green and one of the game’s best rebounders in Looney is enough to throw the game plan completely out of whack.

Let’s hope that Davis is OK. With him, the Lakers could stand a chance against the mighty Warriors. Without him, the chances of pulling off an upset and advancing to the Western Conference Finals have been cut down by a substantial degree.
