The Los Angeles Lakers were eliminated from the playoffs Monday night despite a historic performance from LeBron James, who notched a personal best in points scored in a half in his playoff career with 31 points.

Reflecting on the season postgame, James expressed pride in the Lakers’ resilience after a slow start, but didn’t commit to playing in 2023-24. As of this very moment, LeBron is unsure if he’ll be back with LA next season and the general consensus is he’s mulling retirement.

Of course, everything James says and does is calculated. If you read the tea leaves, LeBron seemingly is drumming up retirement speculation as a leverage play against the Lakers so the front office goes all in this summer.

If Rob Pelinka doesn’t comply, could James demand a trade? If so, what would that mean for his dream of teaming up with his son, Bronny?

It’s too early to say, but there seems to be a conflicting stance about whether LeBron and Bronny are destined to play together.

Lakers: LeBron James not committing to playing with Bronny James

"“I’ve done what I’ve had to do in this league, and my son is going to take his journey. And whatever his journey, however his journey lays out, he’s going to do what’s best for him,” LeBron said following the Lakers’ Game 3 win over the Warriors in the second round. “And as his dad, and his mom, Savannah, and his brother and sister, we’re going to support him in whatever he decides to do. So, just because that’s my aspiration or my goal, doesn’t mean it’s his. And I’m absolutely OK with that.”"

That certainly doesn’t align with what LeBron has been proclaiming over the years. He even inked an extension with the purple and gold that included an opt out after the 2024 season — the same year Bronny, who recently committed to USC, is draft-eligible.

Per ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, the nine-time All-Star was more resolute in teaming up with Bronny earlier in the season.

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst is singing to a different tune, however.

Appearing on “Get Up” Tuesday morning, Windhorst — another reporter with close ties to James — was adamant in saying LeBron’s desire to play with Bronny and pursue another ring will trump whatever exhaustion he may be feeling after carrying the Lakers to the Western Conference Finals.

What does this mean for LeBron’s Lakers future? LA currently doesn’t own its 2024 first-round pick thanks to the Anthony Davis trade. They own their second-round pick that year, but it’s expected Bronny’s draft stock will rise to the point where he’s a surefire first-rounder.

Either way, Bronny could still get drafted by another team.

In that scenario, would James follow his son to a potential contender? Would he let Bronny forge his own NBA path?

It’s impossible to say, but these conflicting reports have opened the door for plenty of speculation until LeBron decides on whether he’ll return for his 21st season.
